A groundbreaking AI tool will be able to track dolphins by their regional accents. Sea mammal expert Dr Julie Oswald, of the University of St Andrews' Scottish Oceans Institute, created the tool, known as the Real-time Odontocete Call Classification Algorithm (Rocca), using AI.

The article from The Independent discusses a study where researchers from the University of Glasgow used AI to analyze the vocalizations of dolphins in the Moray Firth, Scotland. The study found that these dolphins have developed a distinct "Scottish accent" in their whistles, which differs from the sounds made by dolphins in other regions. This regional variation in dolphin vocalizations could be influenced by their environment or social learning, similar to how human accents develop. The AI technology helped in identifying these subtle differences by processing large amounts of acoustic data, providing insights into how dolphins communicate and adapt their sounds in different geographical areas.
