Togo is set to establish its Atomic Energy Commission as part of its strategy to develop nuclear energy, aiming to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on hydroelectric power, which currently accounts for 70% of its electricity. The initiative was discussed during a meeting between Togo's Minister of Mines and Energy, Mila Aziable, and representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. The establishment of the commission is seen as a step towards enhancing energy security, promoting sustainable development, and addressing climate change. The IAEA has agreed to support Togo in this endeavor, focusing on capacity building, regulatory frameworks, and technical cooperation. This move aligns with Togo's broader goal to explore nuclear power as a means to meet its growing energy demands and contribute to regional energy stability.
