  • "This goes beyond bias from clues of race or gender," said Brandon Hill, a machine learning scientist and study co-author. "We found the algorithm could even learn to predict the year an X-ray was taken. It's pernicious; when you prevent it from learning one of these elements, it will instead learn another it previously ignored."

The article from Popular Science discusses a novel application of AI in the brewing industry, where researchers from the University of Copenhagen have developed a method to use X-ray technology to analyze beer. This AI-driven approach allows brewers to examine the contents of beer without opening the can or bottle, providing insights into the beer's composition, including the levels of alcohol, sugar, and other compounds. By employing X-ray fluorescence, the AI can detect the elemental composition of the beer, which can help in quality control, ensuring consistency in batches, and potentially speeding up the brewing process by reducing the need for traditional, time-consuming lab tests. This technology could revolutionize how breweries monitor and adjust their brewing processes in real-time, ensuring that each batch meets the desired standards before it hits the market.
