Dr. Mark Dertzbaugh, after over thirty years of service, was honored by the Medical Research and Development Command (MRDC) upon his retirement. His career began in 1989 at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where he focused on bacterial pathogenesis and vaccine development. Throughout his tenure, Dertzbaugh made significant contributions to military medical research, particularly in the development of vaccines for biodefense. His work extended to leading research on vaccines for diseases like anthrax, plague, and tularemia, and he played a key role in the development of the FDA-approved anthrax vaccine, BioThrax. His leadership also saw advancements in the MRDC's strategic direction, enhancing its capabilities in infectious disease research and biodefense. Colleagues praised his dedication, scientific expertise, and his ability to foster collaboration across various scientific disciplines, leaving a lasting impact on military medical research.
