MeitY funds two AI projects to detect fake media, forms committee on deepfakes

It has funded two AI projects aimed at detecting fake media, including deepfakes. One project, led by IIT Jodhpur, focuses on developing algorithms to identify deepfakes in videos, while the other, by IIIT Hyderabad, works on detecting fake images. Additionally, MeitY has formed a committee to address the broader implications of deepfakes, focusing on creating a framework for detection, prevention, and raising public awareness. This initiative comes in response to the growing concern over the potential misuse of AI-generated content, which could have serious implications for national security, elections, and social harmony. The committee includes experts from various fields to ensure a comprehensive approach to tackling this issue.
