Ancient pyramid uncovered during highway construction
- An unexpected pause in construction has delayed the addition of a third lane to the Pachuca-Huejutla highway near Hidalgo, Mexico. The reason for the scheduling pushback, however, was well warranted
- workers accidentally discovered a roughly 1,375-year-old pyramid built during the height of a multiethnic society known as the Metzca lordship.
In Mexico, construction workers building a highway in the state of Tabasco stumbled upon an ancient pyramid, estimated to be between 1,000 and 1,700 years old, while digging for a new overpass. This pyramid, located in the Comalcalco region, is believed to be from the Late Classic period (600-900 AD) of the Maya civilization. The discovery was made when workers unearthed a large, circular structure made of clay bricks, which was initially thought to be a natural formation but was later identified as an archaeological site. Archaeologists from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) have since taken over the site, halting construction to conduct further investigations. The pyramid, although not as grand as some of the more famous Maya pyramids, provides valuable insights into the lesser-known Comalcalco site, which is unique for its use of brick rather than stone. The find underscores the rich archaeological heritage of the region and the potential for more discoveries as infrastructure projects continue.
