Reno high school wildfire science program enters second year
- The Bureau of Land Management wildland firefighters started the second year of the Fire Science Career and Technical Education program.
The Wildfire Science Program at Reno High School, now in its second year, is designed to educate students about wildfires, their management, and the science behind them. Spearheaded by teacher Jeff Dohl, the program integrates hands-on learning with academic study, focusing on how wildfires impact the environment, communities, and firefighting strategies. Students engage in activities like prescribed burns, learning about fire behavior, and even participate in a summer camp where they can earn college credits. The initiative not only aims to prepare students for potential careers in fire science but also to foster a deeper understanding of fire ecology and its significance in the context of climate change and community safety.
