The article from Gizmodo discusses the upcoming launches of two private lunar landers, Astrobotic's Peregrine and Intuitive Machines' Nova-C, both part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative aimed at fostering commercial space exploration. Astrobotic's Peregrine, set to launch on January 8, 2024, aboard a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket, will carry 20 payloads, including NASA instruments to study the lunar exosphere, radiation, and magnetic fields, as well as a small rover from Carnegie Mellon University. Following closely, Intuitive Machines' Nova-C lander, scheduled for a mid-February launch, will also carry NASA science instruments, focusing on lunar plume-surface interactions, space weather, and radio astronomy. These missions mark significant steps towards NASA's Artemis program, aiming for sustainable human presence on the Moon, and represent the first U.S. lunar landings since the Apollo era, highlighting a shift towards commercial involvement in space exploration.
