Fairbanks police: sergeant OK after DUI suspect rams car before arrest
- FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) -Fairbanks police say one of their sergeants is physically OK after a now-arrested DUI suspect rammed their car during a 30 minute chase from Fairbanks that ended in North Pole.
A Fairbanks police sergeant escaped injury after a DUI suspect rammed into his car during an arrest attempt on January 19, 2025. The incident began when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a business on Airport Way. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle with its lights off and the driver asleep. When the sergeant approached, the driver, later identified as 34-year-old Michael J. Covell, woke up and attempted to flee, crashing into the sergeant's vehicle. Covell was eventually apprehended after a brief chase and charged with DUI, felony eluding, and several other offenses. The sergeant was not injured, and the police emphasized the dangers of driving under the influence.
