  • The Crown Research Institutes will be merged as part of sweeping changes to the science sector. In an email to staff seen by RNZ, the seven CRIs will become three mega science organisations - "Public Research Organisations" (PROs) - with a fourth established to focus on "advanced technology".

The New Zealand government has announced plans to merge its nine Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) into three mega-science groups to enhance collaboration and reduce competition for funding. This restructuring aims to streamline research efforts, improve efficiency, and better address national challenges like climate change, biosecurity, and food security. The proposed mergers will combine AgResearch, Scion, and Plant & Food Research into one group; NIWA, GNS Science, and Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research into another; and ESR with Callaghan Innovation forming the third. This initiative, part of a broader science sector reform, seeks to foster a more integrated approach to science and innovation, with changes expected to be implemented over the next few years.
