Published in the journal Environmental Health Insights, the study found that meats singed with tyres contain high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), particularly a harmful chemical called Benzo [a]pyrene, which is known to increase the risk of cancer.

A recent study highlighted in the Graphic Online has revealed alarming levels of cancer-causing chemicals in meat that is commonly dressed with burnt car tyres, a practice prevalent in some Ghanaian markets. The research, conducted by scientists from the University of Ghana, found that the smoke from burning tyres contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are known to be carcinogenic. These chemicals are absorbed by the meat during the dressing process, posing significant health risks to consumers. The study calls for immediate regulatory measures to ban this hazardous practice and suggests alternative, safer methods for meat preparation to protect public health.
