Kalamazoo Public Schools teacher wins statewide excellence award, cash prize
- A Kalamazoo teacher was awarded ten thousand dollars from the state on Monday for excellence in mathematics teaching, according to the MDE.
Shannon Houtrouw, a teacher at the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center, has been honored with the 2023-24 Michigan Department of Education's Teacher of the Year award. This prestigious recognition comes with a $5,000 cash prize, sponsored by the Michigan Education Excellence Foundation. Houtrouw, who has been teaching for 23 years, was celebrated for her innovative teaching methods and her ability to inspire students in STEM fields. Her approach includes engaging students with real-world applications of science and math, fostering a collaborative learning environment, and encouraging students to explore and question.
