The moon's biggest and most ancient crater is more circular than previously thought
- The South Pole-Aitken basin is the moon's oldest and largest visible crater
- a massive geological wound 4 billion years old that preserves secrets about the moon's early history, much like a lunar time capsule.
The Moon's largest and oldest impact crater, known as the South Pole-Aitken Basin, has been found to be more circular than previously thought, according to new research from the Planetary Science Institute. This basin, which spans about 2,000 kilometers in diameter, was formed over 4 billion years ago and covers nearly a quarter of the Moon's surface. The study, led by planetary scientist Matthew Siegler, utilized data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and China's Chang'E-1 and 2 missions to analyze the basin's shape. The findings suggest that the impactor struck at a lower angle than previously estimated, providing insights into the Moon's early bombardment history and the dynamics of large-scale impacts in the solar system. This research not only refines our understanding of lunar geology but also has implications for future lunar exploration and resource utilization.
