PSLV-C59 successfully launches ESA's PROBA-3 satellites into orbit, showcasing precision formation-flying technology in international collaboration.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the PSLV-C59 mission on October 14, 2023, deploying the European Space Agency's (ESA) Proba-3 satellites into a precise orbit. This mission marks a significant milestone in formation flying technology, as the Proba-3 consists of two satellites, the Coronagraph and the Occulter, designed to fly in formation to create an artificial eclipse, allowing for detailed study of the Sun's corona. The launch took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, and was the 60th flight of the PSLV. The satellites aim to demonstrate precise formation flying, with the Occulter casting a shadow on the Coronagraph to block the Sun's disk, enabling observations of the corona closer to the solar limb than ever before. This mission not only showcases advanced space technology but also strengthens the collaboration between ISRO and ESA.
