Globecomm Receives Initial Order and Launches Broadband Maritime Solution in Partnership with Mach6
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Globecomm Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: GCOM), a leading provider of satellite-based communications infrastructure solutions and services on a global basis, announced today that it is launching a Global Broadband Satellite Maritime Solution with an initial order, in partnership with Mach6, from a satellite solutions provider based in the Netherlands.
The Globecomm maritime solution will deliver seamless connectivity for IP-based applications, including GSM Cellular, VoIP, video teleconference, data file transfers, Internet/intranet and e-mail. A key feature will be the ability to dynamically allocate bandwidth supporting higher bandwidth applications or applications that are sensitive to timing. Globecomm's intelligent VSAT solutions are combined with Mach6's solutions that include onboard computing, content distribution, integrated security policies, voice and video applications, remote inspection, telemedicine, mapping, navigation, real-time control systems, fuel management, and ERP applications and other applications to create a unique proposition in the industry.
The Globecomm maritime solution is an outsourced global Ku-band service in concert with Mach6 based on the Vipersat Technology (platform) from Comtech EFData. Patrick Visser, General Director of Mach6, noted: "We're introducing a global roaming, flexible bandwidth service ranging from 128 kbps to 512 kbps on a shared 512kbps outbound carrier with dedicated return carriers. It is a value added service offering, which includes bandwidth on demand support for short duration ad hoc broadbandbandwidth needs such as remote engine inspection, file distribution or video conferencing. There are currently ten satellite beams covering approximately 70% of the major shipping routes today. The satellites are being served from a number of teleports around the world with VPN connectivity to two locations in Europe, where terrestrial access to the public Internet is served. Globecomm's Kenneth A. Miller International Teleport is a central hub and a vital part of the global infrastructure required to serve these satellites. Terrestrial connectivity between two teleport locations in Europe will be based on MPLS."
Keith Hall SVP, General Manager of Globecomm Network Services noted: "The size of the addressable maritime marketplace for Globecomm consists of approximately of 120,000 vessels, with 50,000 vessels having over 2 tons of capacity. Existing narrow-band operators traditionally serve the blue water or the deep ocean tanker market. The current operational expense of these providers is growing due to the importance of email, Internet access and the move to electronic documents. Other drivers include extending ERP and applications like plant maintenance, electronic manuals and safety training offshore. Ship owners and operators recognize the value of broadband VSAT fixed-rate pricing in the face of new applications and increasing usage. The ability to accurately project and control future expenses is attractive. Globecomm's experience with VSAT, converged cellular, multi-media and content management services over global IP networks positions it well to deliver high-demand integrated services to the maritime industry. The broad maritime market primarily consists of commercial shipping, cruise ships, offshore oil and gas exploration / production and military. Commercial shipping of container, liquid and bulk carrier deliveries require hemispheric or global coverage for office and crew communications and therefore have a need for ubiquitous service independent of their vessel location. Mach6's experience in the maritime industry brings immediate know-how to Globecomm in this market segment. The maritime eco system has specific needs as to which Globecomm has dedicated the past 18 months evaluating and working with customers and suppliers to develop specific solutions. Mach6 is currently serving over 140 vessels."
This partnership builds upon prior cooperation and agreement established in a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the companies earlier in 2008, under which formal trials were conducted for proof of performance and demonstration of the solutions now being offered for a cost efficient and robust global maritime broadband network. The companies recently completed an installation on a new vessel in Shangri China for CS Marine.
