RALEIGH, N.C.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, and the Fedora Project, a Red Hat sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration project, today announced they will present three separate presentations at the seventh annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE). SCaLE is one of the largest Linux conferences in the region, attracting enterprise and industry professionals along with smaller businesses, non-profit industries and Linux enthusiasts.

The rise of software patents continues to pose challenges for free and open source software (FOSS) developers, including the difficulties of clearing patents and the risk of patent litigation. In his presentation " Patents and Open Source After Bilski," Rob Tiller, vice president and assistant general counsel, IP for Red Hat, will explore the legal issues raised by patent law for FOSS developers and users. Tiller will provide an overview for non-lawyers on exclusionary patent rights and contrast those with the open collaboration culture of FOSS. He will also discuss the recent Bilski decision of the U.S. Federal Circuit, and how that decision might improve the current problem of software patents facing FOSS developers.

Realtime Linux offers tremendous benefits for applications ranging from multimedia recording/playback to military command-and-control systems to high-end enterprise workloads like financial trading systems. Bryan Che, product manager for Red Hat Enterprise MRG, Red Hat's next-generation IT infrastructure incorporating Messaging, Realtime, and Grid functionality, will present "Introduction to Realtime Linux." Che will provide an overview of Realtime Linux including its development history, current state, a roadmap of future Realtime kernel and tools development and current Realtime Linux performance data. He will also present information on how to ensure that applications and systems can properly take advantage of the many performance benefits available with realtime technology.

Fedora offers a complete set of tools for generating a customized distribution. The output format can be installable CDs or DVDs, or Live images suitable for CD/DVD or USB keys. These tools allow sub-communities to consume and contribute to FOSS using a platform that is geared toward their specific needs. In his presentation "Fedora Remix," Clint Savage, regional ambassador for the Fedora Project, will demonstrate the toolset available in Fedora and how those tools can be used to fill a variety of needs for the hobbyist, IT administrator or the FOSS advocate.

Fedora will also host a Fedora Activity Day at SCaLE on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009. During this mini-conference, Fedora experts will show new and existing contributors how to get involved in Fedora by working on some simple tasks. This Fedora Activity Day will focus on writing and editing the new User Guide and packaging fonts for use in the Fedora distribution. In addition, the Fedora Project will also have a booth on the exhibit floor.
