The LZ experiment's first science run sets new constraints on dark matter interactions
- Dark Matter experiment is a large research effort involving over 200 scientists and engineers at 40 institutions worldwide. Its key objective is to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) by analyzing data collected by the LZ detector,
The LZ (LUX-ZEPLIN) experiment, located in South Dakota, has completed its first science run, setting new constraints on dark matter interactions. This experiment aims to detect Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), a leading candidate for dark matter. During its initial 60-day run, LZ did not detect any WIMPs but managed to set the most stringent limits yet on how WIMPs might interact with normal matter. The LZ detector, which is filled with liquid xenon, is designed to observe the faint signals produced when dark matter particles collide with xenon nuclei. Although no dark matter was detected, the results have significantly narrowed down the possible characteristics of WIMPs, providing crucial data for future experiments and theories about dark matter.
