  • Norwegian shipbuilder Vard has unveiled a new project involving Knutsen Tankers to identify a suitable nuclear reactor to power ships. The NuProShip programme, short for Nuclear Propulsion in Shipping, also involves the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Alesund and class society DNV.

Knutsen Tankers and VARD, a Fincantieri subsidiary, have announced a collaborative project to explore the design of nuclear-powered ships, aiming to reduce the maritime industry's carbon footprint. This initiative, named the "Project Led by Knutsen and VARD for Nuclear-Powered Ships," focuses on integrating nuclear propulsion technology into shipping to meet the IMO's 2050 decarbonization targets. The project will assess the feasibility, safety, and regulatory aspects of nuclear propulsion, potentially revolutionizing how ships are powered by moving away from traditional fossil fuels. The collaboration also involves studying the economic viability and public acceptance of nuclear-powered vessels, with an emphasis on ensuring that the technology can be safely implemented in the maritime sector.
