  • The trial is the first time that DSTL has tested a UK-built optical atomic clock outside of a laboratory, offering a new capability beyond the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) that currently exist.

The UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has developed a groundbreaking atomic clock utilizing quantum technology, which promises to be the most accurate timekeeping device ever created. This new clock uses a technique called "squeezed light" to enhance the precision of atomic timekeeping by reducing quantum noise, thereby allowing for more accurate measurements of time. The innovation could have significant implications for fields requiring precise timing, such as satellite navigation, telecommunications, and even fundamental physics research. The project, part of a broader initiative to advance quantum technologies, was supported by funding from the UK government and aims to push the boundaries of what's possible in time measurement, potentially leading to advancements in global navigation systems and the synchronization of financial markets.
