  • He headed the nuclear component of the 1998 Operation Shakti at Pokhran, making him one of the rare atomic scientists who contributed to both Smiling Buddha in 1974 and Operation Shakti in 1998. Reflecting on his passing,

R. Chidambaram, a distinguished nuclear physicist and the architect behind India's first nuclear test, Operation Smiling Buddha, passed away at the age of 88. Known for his significant contributions to India's nuclear program, Chidambaram was instrumental in the 1974 nuclear test which marked India's entry into the nuclear club. He served as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and was a key figure in the Department of Atomic Energy. His death was mourned by many in the scientific community, with tributes highlighting his pivotal role in shaping India's strategic capabilities and his dedication to scientific research.
