  • As part of 'Operation Smiling Buddha' -- the 1974 nuclear tests -- Chidamaram was known to have personally brought the plutonium from Mumbai to Pokhran in Rajasthan.

R. Chidambaram, a distinguished physicist known for his pivotal role in India's nuclear program, passed away at the age of 88. He was instrumental in the 1974 nuclear test, codenamed "Operation Smiling Buddha," which marked India's entry into the nuclear club. Chidambaram served as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. His contributions extended beyond nuclear physics into materials science, earning him numerous accolades including the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award. His death marks the end of an era for India's scientific community, leaving behind a legacy of significant advancements in nuclear technology and policy.
