  • There's still a lot of work to be done for the futuristic visions of the hydrogen economy to take flight. When it comes to one of the biggest challenges, harnessing green hydrogen, scientists at the Ulsan National Institute of Science & Technology (UNIST) in Korea, along with colleagues, just unveiled a major breakthrough.

Scientists have achieved a significant milestone in the quest to harness nuclear fusion, a process that powers the sun and stars, potentially offering a near-limitless source of clean energy. At the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, researchers successfully produced a fusion reaction that resulted in a net energy gain, meaning the reaction generated more energy than was used to initiate it. This breakthrough involved using lasers to fuse hydrogen atoms into helium, mimicking the conditions inside stars. The experiment, part of the National Ignition Facility's efforts, marks a pivotal moment in fusion research, although commercial fusion power plants are still decades away. This development not only advances our understanding of fusion but also brings hope for a future where fusion could provide sustainable, safe, and virtually inexhaustible energy, significantly reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and helping combat climate change.
