Eminent nuclear scientist R. Chidambaram, known for his pivotal role in India's nuclear tests, passed away at the age of 89. Chidambaram was the architect behind Operation Smiling Buddha in 1974, India's first successful nuclear test, and Operation Shakti in 1998, which included a series of five nuclear tests. He served as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and was a key figure in the Department of Atomic Energy. His contributions extended to various scientific fields, earning him numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award. Chidambaram's death marks the end of an era in India's nuclear science history, leaving behind a legacy of significant advancements in the country's defense and scientific capabilities.
