  • An innovative, three-year project aimed at revolutionising the railway industry using artificial intelligence has been launched by the University of Derby and Sperry Rail.

The University of Derby, in collaboration with Sperry Rail, has initiated a pioneering project to enhance rail inspection processes using artificial intelligence (AI). This project, which has received funding from Innovate UK, aims to develop an AI system capable of analyzing rail data to detect defects more accurately and efficiently than current methods. The initiative involves creating a machine learning model that can interpret data from Sperry's rail inspection vehicles, which use ultrasonic technology to identify internal rail flaws. By automating the analysis, the project seeks to reduce human error, increase the speed of inspections, and ultimately improve rail safety and maintenance across the UK. This collaboration not only showcases the potential of AI in industrial applications but also positions the University of Derby at the forefront of technological innovation in rail infrastructure.
