The European Union has initiated the IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity, and Security by Satellite) project, aiming to establish a sovereign satellite constellation by 2030 to rival American networks like Starlink. This €6 billion endeavor, backed by both public and private funds, will provide secure communications for EU governments, military, and citizens, enhancing capabilities in crisis management, surveillance, and connectivity in remote areas. The project, which has been in development for over a decade, will also support the EU's Galileo and Copernicus programs, with plans to launch the first satellites in 2027.
