FBI warns Americans to keep their text messages secure: What to know
The U.S. believes hackers affiliated with China's government are infiltrating telecoms and stealing users' data. The FBI has urged people to use end-to-end encryption to keep their info safe.
The FBI has issued a warning to Americans about the security of their text messages, highlighting the risks associated with SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA). The advisory points out that SMS messages can be intercepted through various methods like SIM-swapping attacks, where attackers take over a victim's phone number, or through malware that can read text messages directly from a device. The FBI recommends using more secure forms of 2FA, such as authenticator apps or physical security keys, which are less vulnerable to these types of attacks. Additionally, the agency advises individuals to be cautious with unsolicited messages, to enable two-step verification where available, and to regularly update their devices and software to protect against vulnerabilities. The warning comes in light of increasing cyber threats and the need for heightened personal cybersecurity measures.
