Physicists magnetize a material with light
Published on 2024-12-19 20:22:23 - Science Daily
- Physicists have created a new and long-lasting magnetic state in a material, using only light. The results provide a new way to control and switch antiferromagnetic materials, which are of interest for their potential to advance information processing and memory chip technology.
The article from ScienceDaily discusses a study published in the journal *Nature Communications* that explores the potential of using a common cold virus, specifically a modified strain of the Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), as a treatment for glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Researchers found that this virus can selectively infect and kill cancer cells while sparing healthy cells. The study demonstrated that when the virus was administered directly into the tumor in mice, it not only reduced tumor size but also extended survival rates. Furthermore, the virus was engineered to enhance its cancer-killing properties and to reduce its ability to cause disease in healthy tissues. This approach represents a promising oncolytic virotherapy, where viruses are used to destroy cancer cells, potentially offering a new avenue for treating this deadly cancer with minimal side effects on the patient's overall health.
