A massive cosmic water reservoir, containing 140 trillion times the amount of water found on Earth, has been discovered by astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. This colossal water mass, located 12 billion light-years away, surrounds a quasar named APM 08279+5255, which is powered by a supermassive black hole. The water exists in the form of vapor and is part of the quasar's broad-line region, where gas and dust orbit the black hole at high speeds. This discovery not only highlights the extreme environments around quasars but also provides insights into the early universe's composition and the processes of galaxy formation. The presence of such vast amounts of water suggests that water is common even in the early universe, challenging previous assumptions about water distribution in space.
