MORRISVILLE, NC--(Marketwire - August 3, 2009) - [ Tekelec ] (NASDAQ: [ TKLC ]), the network signaling, mobile messaging and performance management company, has joined the [ GSMA Rich Communications Suite (RCS) ] initiative. Tekelec brings its next-generation network signaling and short message service (SMS) expertise to help evolve mobile messaging to an interoperable, feature-rich application.

This industry-first approach gathers more than 80 operators and vendors to lay the foundation for IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) and long term evolution/system architecture evolution (LTE/SAE) networks. These next-generation network (NGN) frameworks, driven by [ session initiation protocol (SIP) ] for session signaling, support an increased amount of data leveraging Internet protocol (IP)-based services.

"RCS will enable operators to launch new services, enrich subscribers' experiences and derive new revenues in saturated markets," said Ron de Lange, executive vice president at Tekelec. "Tekelec's heritage of core networking expertise, combined with mobile messaging innovation and our roster of SIP pioneers, gives us a distinct advantage to help define the future of messaging."

The RCS initiative introduces standardized, interoperable IP-enabled functionality across operators' networks and mobile devices. The first wave of RCS services includes:

-- Enhanced Address Book, which adds subscribers' presence information and new capabilities such as contacts' photos and video and file transfers.

-- Rich Call, which supports video and photo exchanges during a call.

-- Rich Messaging, which simplifies and unifies multiple messaging experiences.

Tekelec's [ Mobile Messaging Product Family ] enables transparent message routing between different protocols and types of networks, a pre-requisite for RCS success. In addition, Tekelec's [ EAGLE® XG ] signaling platform realizes rich communications by enhancing the user experience through blending new and existing messaging services, such as video transfers and text transmission.

More information on Tekelec's mobile messaging solution is available in the company's free white paper, "[ The SMS Network ]." Tekelec's free "[ Service Orchestration and Mediation ]" white paper also highlights how operators can deliver rich, mixed services in NGNs.
