RCN Corporation: RCN to Be Support Sponsor and Official Cable Television & Internet Provider of the 2009 Legg Mason Tennis Clas
HERNDON, VA--(Marketwire - July 29, 2009) - RCN Corporation (
First played in July of 1969, the inaugural tournament became one of the first open professional tennis tournaments held in the United States. The Legg Mason Tennis Classic has since been part of some of the most innovative changes in tennis, including blue courts, instant replay/video boards in the stadium, Olympus US Open Series, Sunday Main Draw start and, starting in 2009, an ATP World Tour "500" level tournament.
"We welcome RCN as a Support Sponsor of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic," said Jeff Newman, Tournament Director. "We're also pleased to announce that RCN is the Official Provider of Cable Television & Internet for this year's tournament. RCN has an excellent service reputation and a proven performance record that made it easy for us to decide on whom we trusted to manage our video and high speed data needs."
As an ATP World Tour 500 tournament, the Legg Mason Tennis Classic is one of the top 20 men's tournaments in the world. What this means for the Legg Mason Tennis Classic is greater prestige. The "500s" will be backed by top player commitments, offering 500 points for each champion towards his world ranking, nearly $1.2 Million in player compensation, and increased national & international exposure for the tournament and its sponsors.
"As the hometown provider of all-digital, competitive cable television, and high-speed data services here in the National Capital area for the past 10 years and more, we are very proud and pleased to have this opportunity to be a part of the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's Legg Mason Tennis Classic," said RCN's General Manager Richard Beville. "We look forward to meeting their cable and data needs for this outstanding event."
A portion of the proceeds from the Legg Mason Tennis Classic benefits the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF). The WTEF seeks to improve the life prospects for DC area youth, particularly those from lower-income communities, through tennis, educational and community-based activities that teach discipline, build self-esteem and improve academic performance. "As the first triple play competitor of phone, cable and internet services, we champion competition at all levels and are proud to be an official support sponsor," said RCN Senior Vice President Strategic External Affairs, Programming and International Marketing Richard Ramlall. "We will be promoting the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on 500 cross channel ads across 26 networks for three weeks."
