ISLANDIA, N.Y.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--CA (NASDAQ: CA) today announced that Lockheed Martin chose [ CA SPECTRUM Network Fault Manager ] (CA SPECTRUM NFM) as part of the Aegis Open Architecture Weapon System, which the U.S. Navy successfully tested at sea in December 2008 aboard the Guided Missile Cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52).

CA SPECTRUM NFM helps verify the performance and availability of computing networks with automated service, fault and configuration management. Patented root cause and impact analysis technology helps rapidly pinpoint degraded or failed network components, calculates impact and offers actions to resolve incidents.

"Aegis Open Architecture is a core element of the Navy's strategy for a single objective architecture for all of its surface combatants," said Orlando Carvalho, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin's Surface/Sea-Based Missile Defense line of business. "The technology we are harnessing from commercial software sources, such as CA, is demonstrating the ability to insert capability and deliver increased performance to the fleet."

Lockheed Martin installed this configuration, the newest version of the world's most advanced naval weapon system, aboard the Bunker Hill as part of the ship's modernization. The company developed Aegis using commonly available, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computing hardware and software, including CA SPECTRUM NFM.

"Aegis-equipped cruisers are formidable warships, and they are making a significant contribution to our nation's maritime security and defense," said Charles Rizzo, strategic alliance director in CA's Public Sector group. "CA is pleased to provide Lockheed Martin and the Navy with COTS software that contributes to the modernization and battle readiness of these impressive ships' weapons systems."

By using this approach, the Navy can more easily stay on technology's leading edge with up-to-date solutions. Because CA SPECTRUM NFM is readily available and upgraded regularly, war fighters can more easily implement technology refreshes and capability upgrades to the weapon system.

The Aegis weapon system is the world's premier naval defense system and is the sea-based element of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System. Its ability to detect, track and engage targets is unmatched.

The 89 Aegis-equipped ships currently in service around the globe (with 17 additional ships planned or under contract) have more than 1,000 years of at-sea operational experience. In addition to the U.S., Aegis is the maritime weapon system of choice for Australia, Japan, Norway, South Korea and Spain.

Platform independent and vendor neutral, CA SPECTRUM NFM is a core component of the [ CA Network & Voice Management ] (CA NVM) solution, a robust and integrated solution set for network service, fault, configuration, performance and voice application management.
