PLEASANTON, CA--(Marketwire - April 2, 2009) - Polycom, Inc. (NASDAQ: [ PLCM ]), the global leader in telepresence, video, and voice communications solutions, today announced that its SpectraLink Wireless Telephones will be prominently featured at the [ HIMSS09 ] Annual Conference and Expo. Polycom's SpectraLink Wireless Telephones have improved healthcare communications since the early 1990s. Today, Polycom continues to play a leading role in helping healthcare organizations further integrate communication technologies to improve patient care and outcomes.

Committed to open standards and interoperability, Polycom's SpectraLink 8000 Series telephones will serve as the first and only mobile endpoints in the [ HIMSS09 Interoperability Showcase ], which highlights the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise's ([ IHE ]) common framework for delivering applications interoperability across local, regional, and national health information exchanges.

The 2009 Interoperability Showcase will be set up as a HIMSS [ Health Information Exchange (HIE) ] based environment, where patient health information is exchanged electronically across different healthcare settings. These clinical scenarios with enhanced privacy and security will be enabled by the standards-based IHE International framework and the demonstration will also include the [ Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) ] interoperability specifications.

As part of its interoperability efforts this year, IHE is developing the Alarm Communication Management (ACM) profile to improve clinical efficiencies. Polycom's SpectraLink 8000 Series Wi-Fi handsets serve as the Alarm Communicator devices. The wireless telephones display alarm and alert messages generated by various Alarm Reporter sources and are managed through the Alarm Management function. This forward-looking Showcase demonstration is part of the IHE New Directions category, and is representative of the ACM profile work that is now underway in the IHE Patient Care Devices Domain.

"Application integration combined with high-quality mobile voice communication has become a must-have for our nursing staff to provide the best patient care," said Scott Mahnke, regional telecommunications coordinator for Adventist Health Systems. "Polycom's collaboration with IHE and other application providers demonstrates their commitment to innovative healthcare solutions."

Polycom experts will be on-hand to discuss how wireless telephone systems are capable of expanding beyond traditional voice communication to address patient safety and other key healthcare initiatives. Ben Guderian, vice president of wireless healthcare solutions at Polycom, will discuss mobility in healthcare during two separate sessions:
