SUNNYVALE, Calif.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:BCSI), the leader in WAN optimization and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that the Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) has deployed Blue Coat® ProxySG® appliances to control peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic and reduce congestion on its network from non-business applications, resulting in lower bandwidth costs at its Internet gateway. By limiting P2P and other non-business critical traffic on its network, the Agriculture Bank of China has also mitigated its risk of exposure to Web-based malware threats.

"We saw tremendous improvements in our network, including lower bandwidth costs and faster application response time, after deploying Blue Coat to mitigate the impact of P2P traffic," said Zhu Wei from the Agriculture Bank of China's data center in Shanghai. "By controlling this traffic with the ProxySG appliance, we have also reduced our exposure to Web-based malware threats that utilize Web applications like P2P."

With Blue Coat ProxySG appliances, the Agriculture Bank of China can consistently enforce its corporate IT policies across its enterprise. ProxySG appliances enable the bank to set corporate policies based on users, groups, applications, content and a variety of other attributes. This granular control allows the bank to optimize its network based on employee needs.

With the rise of sophisticated Web-based malware, the growing use of P2P applications by its employees exposed the Agriculture Bank of China to increased risk of attack. Blue Coat ProxySG appliances provide ABC with real-time ratings on unknown content and block known malware hosts, preventing malicious downloads that are masquerading in legitimate sites. ProxySG appliances also work in conjunction with the Blue Coat® WebPulse™ service, a community watch environment in which the discovery of malware by one is shared with all, to provide up-to-date information on the latest malware threats.

"Blue Coat ProxySG appliances provide a unique combination of features that allow the Agriculture Bank of China to both control access to various applications like P2P and to protect the network from Web-based malware threats," said Matt Young, vice president, Asia Pacific region for Blue Coat Systems. "This combined functionality in a single appliance allows the bank to reduce network congestion to improve overall performance while securing Web-based traffic."

Founded in 1951, ABC is a subsidiary of the People's Bank of China and was originally chartered to develop a financial system for rural areas. Today, ABC has a nationwide network of branches and owns China's largest online banking network.

Blue Coat ProxySG appliances provide the visibility, acceleration and security that organizations such as the Agriculture Bank of China require to establish and enforce IT policies that are in line with corporate goals.
