SEATTLE, WA and READING, UK--(Marketwire - May 14, 2009) - Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: [ CRAY ]) today announced the appointment of Duncan Roweth as principal engineer in the CTO office. With 20 years of experience in the high performance computing (HPC) industry, Roweth will work on Cray's future interconnect R&D and will also be in charge of the company's research activities across Europe.

Roweth co-founded UK-based interconnect firm Quadrics Ltd. in 1996. Prior to joining Cray, he served as Quadrics' head of software R&D, HPC business development manager and HPC technical sales lead. Earlier, he worked for Meiko and Inmos. Roweth earned his undergraduate degree in mathematical physics at Manchester University and his doctorate in simulation algorithms for elementary particle physics from Edinburgh University. He has authored and co-authored numerous technical articles.

"With his deep understanding of HPC software and hardware, Duncan can contribute substantially to our R&D program, especially in the area of interconnects, which are critical to the scalability and performance of Cray systems," said Steve Scott, Cray's chief technology officer. "I am excited to be working with him."

According to Ulla Thiel, Cray vice president, Europe, "It is a great step forward for Cray to have Duncan Roweth lead our R&D efforts in Europe. His strong relationships within the HPC community will be essential for Cray's growing momentum in Europe."

"Cray is an HPC innovation leader and has an exciting technical and product roadmap," said Roweth. "I'm looking forward to helping drive the company's interconnect R&D efforts and to expanding Cray's customer collaborations and R&D projects in Europe."
