REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwire - March 18, 2009) - With millions of Americans doing their part to go green this Earth Day, [ support.com ]®, the remote technology service company that makes owning and maintaining technology pain-free, is kicking off a 30-day "Green Your PC" challenge to help people do their part in improving the environment by simply optimizing their home PC's energy settings.

In time for Earth Day on April 22, support.com is making it easy for computer owners to "green" their PCs by downloading a simple Facebook application that sets a computer's power settings optimally to save electricity. Consumers can run the program, encourage friends to do the same, and then compete to see who can influence the biggest savings.

The application, which is guided by recommendations from [ Energy Star ] and [ Carbonfund.org ], tracks a consumer's daily savings in trees, CO2 and barrels of oil, and multiplies it for the number of friends they have invited who also use the program. By inviting more friends, consumers move up the ranks, while watching their energy savings add up.

The application is available at [ http://apps.facebook.com/greenyourpc ].

"Unlike other Facebook applications that just encourage people to spread green messages in the virtual world, this Facebook application lets you make real-world changes that impact your carbon footprint," said Anthony Rodio, Chief Operating Officer of support.com. "In the next 30 days leading to Earth Day, consumers who want to make a difference are encouraged to use our Green Your PC application and share the program with friends and family. Together, we can watch as our collective actions have a growing positive impact on our environment."

According to Carbonfund.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects globally, efforts to reduce electricity use to the level set by the "Green Your PC" app, if applied to 100,000 computers and monitors, would save more than 11 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually compared to computers that do not have their hibernate or standby functionality enabled. That is equivalent to the emissions from burning 13,000 barrels of oil, while the positive impact on the environment would be similar to planting 1,000 acres of trees.
