Rackable Systems to Support New Quad-Core AMD Opteron" HE and SE Processors
FREMONT, Calif.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--[ Rackable Systems, Inc ]. (NASDAQ:RACK), a leading provider of server and storage solutions for large-scale data centers, today announced the immediate availability of servers with the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ HE and SE processors (formerly code-named "Shanghai"). The new low-power Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE processors enable Rackable Systems to continue to deliver the industry's most cutting-edge, power-efficient servers, while the new high-performing Quad-Core AMD Opteron SE processors allow Rackable Systems to further maximize server performance for mission-critical applications.
Rackable Systems will expand the number of available Built-to-Order AMD processor-based data center server and enclosure configurations to include a CloudRack™-based configuration, a one-of-a-kind server and rack design that uniquely optimizes computer and storage densities for cloud computing environments. By leveraging the 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE processors, the CloudRack and other high-density Rackable Systems models can deliver even greater power efficiencies over previous Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, especially within highly dense virtualized and cloud computing environments.
"AMD and Rackable Systems continue their tradition of innovation in the data center, delivering superior energy-saving technology at a time when customers are feeling the increased strain of tightening budgets," said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation division, AMD (NYSE:AMD). "By utilizing AMD's latest Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor technology, Rackable Systems' customers will continue to benefit from enhanced price-performance and performance-per-watt capabilities, helping them address the rapidly changing demands of today's data center."
Rackable Systems will also support the high-performance Quad-Core AMD Opteron SE processors, which are ideal for High Performance Computing (HPC) environments. The SE processors further augment Rackable Systems' high-performance server and storage solutions.
"Like Rackable Systems, AMD continues to develop effective, energy-saving technologies designed to reduce CPU power consumption during non-peak workloads and help lower data centers' total operational cost," said Giovanni Coglitore, chief technology officer at Rackable Systems. "Together, Rackable Systems' innovative, Eco-Logical data center configurations and Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors' leading energy efficiencies give our customers the tools they need to squeeze maximum power and cost efficiencies out of their existing data center footprint, without having to sacrifice performance."
All available Rackable Systems servers with Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors leverage AMD's Direct Connect Architecture, which uses high bandwidth interconnect links that allow processors to connect directly with others in the configuration, the I/O subsystem and the main memory banks, helping reduce bottlenecks inherent in traditional front-side bus architectures. AMD CoolCore™ technology and Enhanced AMD PowerNow!™ technology are also built into each Rackable Systems server with Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, supporting optimum application performance and providing the ability to turn off portions of the processor logic and memory controller when not in use, and helping to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
Availability
Rackable Systems servers supporting Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ HE and SE processors are available immediately and include a wide selection of 1U, 2U, 3U and 4U enclosures in either half-depth or standard-full depth form factors.
