SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - September 1, 2009) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: [ RVBD ]), the IT infrastructure performance company for networks, applications and storage, today announced that the company's wide area network (WAN) optimization solutions support the recently announced VMware [ vSphere™ 4 ]. By utilizing Riverbed® WAN optimization in conjunction with VMware vSphere™ 4, enterprises are able to rapidly deploy, migrate and protect application workloads running in enterprise private clouds.

Riverbed WAN optimization technology enhances VMware vSphere™ 4 environments in several ways:

1. Acceleration and optimization of traffic from private clouds built on VMware vSphere™ 4, thus enabling enterprises to rapidly deploy, migrate and protect cloud-based workloads over the WAN.

2. Accelerating consolidation of applications and servers into the cloud/datacenter while maintaining end-user performance, which enables virtualization projects with a greater ROI.

3. Improving backup/replication times while reducing WAN bandwidth consumption, which enables better data protection in a virtual environment.

"VMware vSphere™ 4 raises the bar by delivering efficiency and performance required to run business-critical applications, uncompromised control over service levels, and customer choice through on-premise and off-premise application hosting," said Shekar Ayyar, vice president, infrastructure alliances, VMware. "We are glad to see Riverbed's support for VMware vSphere™ 4 as its technology complements the VMware platform to help customers achieve quicker ROI by providing efficient, flexible and reliable application acceleration, data replication and backup services over the WAN."

"We look forward to working closely with VMware to help bring the benefits of VMware vSphere™ 4 to organizations worldwide," said Venugopal Pai, vice president of global alliances at Riverbed. "Organizations of all sizes are feeling pressure, now more than ever, to do more with less. The combination of Riverbed WAN optimization and VMware vSphere™ 4 allows organizations to consolidate their technology while accelerating performance -- an operational and economical advantage for any business."

In 2008, VMware and Riverbed announced an OEM agreement to embed VMware technology as the preferred virtualization platform for the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP), a virtualized partition within Steelhead® appliances. Riverbed works closely with VMware, encouraging Riverbed Technology Alliance (RTA) partners to become members of the VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) program. The alliance programs enable RSP software applications to be VMware Ready™ and available on the VMware Virtual Appliance Marketplace (VAM).
