Fourth Redknee Loran Award Sponsors Undergraduate Student TORONTO, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Redknee (TSX: RKN), a leading provider of business-critical software and solutions for communications service providers, is pleased to announce the newest recipient of the Redknee sponsored Loran Award, Alison Lee, who will begin her studies at University of Waterloo shortly. The Loran Award is granted in conjunction with the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, which provides funding for undergraduate studies and an enrichment program for talented young Canadians. For the past 10 years, Redknee has been an associate supporter of the program, providing scholarships worth up to $75,000 over four years. Alison will be Redknee's fourth recipient of the award, where the company hopes she will eventually join Loran Award alumni including Redknee's chief executive, Lucas Skoczkowski, and its head of EMEA operations, Chris Newton Smith. Redknee's CEO Lucas Skoczkowski commented: "As a proud Canadian company, we are active supporters of local talent. Having experienced the great value of the Loran Award myself, I feel a strong affinity for the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation and am a true believer in its cause. The emphasis it places on giving talented Canadians the support and encouragement they need to grow as active citizens, makes Redknee proud to contribute to this valuable experience." The Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation prides itself on selecting recipients who not only excel academically but also show strength in character, service and leadership. As one of 30 award recipients selected from more than 3,600 applicants, Alison Lee, a student at Marc Garneau Collegiate in North York, ran a multi-school clean up of several local parks in aid of Earth Week. In addition, Alison was a gold medallist at the 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair, heads her soccer and hockey teams, swims, and plays the flute. Alison will be studying nanotech engineering at the University of Waterloo in the fall of 2009. As an associate supporter of the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation's Loran Award, Redknee will support Alison's undergraduate studies with a scholarship worth up to $75,000 over four years. Her award includes an $8,000 cash stipend, matched by a tuition waiver from one of 24 Canadian universities, as well as $7,500 in funding for three kinds of summer experiences: public policy, enterprise and personal/community development. Alison will also be mentored by a community leader during her undergraduate studies. Of the 30 awards granted, 15 are underwritten by The W. Garfield Weston Foundation. Donations from universities, individuals, foundations and corporations such as Redknee, underwrite the full costs of the remaining Loran Awards. James Appleyard, chairperson of the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation commented: "For more than 20 years, the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation has been committed to young local talent. But we wouldn't be able to do it without the support from successful Canadian companies such as Redknee. We are very grateful for Redknee's involvement over the past ten years, which has enabled us to continue to provide hundreds of gifted students with funding for undergraduate study scholarships, as well as valuable mentoring experience."
