SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--[ Citrix Online ], a division of Citrix Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTXS), today announced the creation of the World Wide Workplace Web imperative, a unique initiative dedicated to examining issues related to business professionals working remotely by using online collaboration tools. The Web Commuting Council – created to foster multiple points of view – is currently conducting a comprehensive survey of this critical trend. The initial report, due in early 2009, will combine survey results with provocative insights and recommendations from council members.

"The small and mid-sized businesses that employ half the U.S. workforce are developing innovative ways to work with dispersed colleagues, partners and customers," said Brett Caine, general manager, Citrix Online. "Their growing reliance on Web commuting and online collaboration tools allow companies to rethink every procedure and even change their basic economics to succeed in today's World Wide Workplace of business."

With the creation of a Web Commuting Council, the initiative brings together an array of specialists from distinct but related fields: human-resources experts, academics exploring contemporary commuting trends, business-travel researchers, urban-suburban planners, family and work/life balance advocates and futurists studying work habits in the digital age. The council's goal is to capture a snapshot of how Web commuting has transformed the office into a World Wide Workplace. The council will also look at how Web commuting impacts broader issues, such as: effectively competing in a global economy; changes in the family structure when parents are home more; and how the urban/suburban landscape might change if the traditional commute ritual is disrupted.

The survey, sponsored by Citrix Online and conducted by the polling company, inc., covers a broad variety of related issues, from personal attitudes regarding working from home to the willingness of SMBs to hire employees from other cities (or even other countries).

"There's no question that online collaboration technologies can reshape the competitive landscape for SMBs, giving them the opportunity to extend their reach without the limitations imposed by geography," Caine added. "As mobile lifestyles and work styles become increasingly prevalent, we see the need for new research and an ongoing dialogue with a council of experts to address the demands and opportunities in today's changing workplace."
