Comtech AHA Announces Global Hosting Company, Verio, as Its Customer
MOSCOW, Idaho--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Comtech AHA Corporation (AHA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (NASDAQ:CMTL), today announced thatVerio, an NTT Communications Company, selected its AHA363-PCIe GZIP compression card, which effectively compresses data on their storage appliances to reduce disk requirements.
"Verio selected the AHA compression card because it allows us to increase the capacity of our backup infrastructure with no increase in server count or datacenter space. Testing during initial trials showed Verio was able to reduce its content to 38 percent of its original size (compression ratio of 2.6:1)," said Fred Martin, vice president of operations, Verio. "Having this technology available in the market today has helped Verio to save thousands of dollars in capital and operational expenses by freeing up storage space and enabling a longer life-span on our drives and servers."
The AHA363-PCle card offers many advantages over software-based compression solutions. It is faster, offers lower latencies and requires less power to perform the compression function than other options. The AHA363-PCle offloads the data compression task from the core CPUs, thus freeing up resources for other tasks, while significantly reducing power consumption.
The system is based on Comtech AHA's AHA3610 design - the industry's first-ever GZIP compression and decompression integrated circuit (IC) - which offers up to 2.5 Gbits/sec throughput via hardware, while also giving significant power savings over GZIP software compression.
Based on the Open Standard GZIP Data Compression Algorithm, the AHA363-PCle supports compression throughput at 5.0 Gbps using an industry standard X4 lane PCI-Express Interface.
