A sea mammal expert has developed a groundbreaking tool that can track dolphins by their regional accents. Dr Julie Oswald, of the University of St Andrews' Scottish Oceans Institute, created the tool, known as the Real-time Odontocete Call Classification Algorithm (Rocca), using AI.

The article from The Independent discusses a study revealing that dolphins in the North Sea have been observed using tools, a behavior previously noted in other dolphin populations but now confirmed in this region. Researchers found that these dolphins use sponges as tools to protect their beaks while foraging on the seabed, a technique known as "sponging." This behavior, which was first documented in dolphins off the coast of Western Australia, suggests a level of cultural transmission among dolphins, where knowledge and techniques are passed down through generations. The study highlights the adaptability and intelligence of dolphins, showing that tool use is not limited to a specific geographic location but is a widespread capability among the species. This discovery adds to the understanding of dolphin behavior and their capacity for cultural learning.
