MIAMI, FL--(Marketwire - September 21, 2009) - [ Tekelec ] (NASDAQ: [ TKLC ]) will join two panels on telecommunications security at the VON Conference & Expo 2009. The presentations will examine application security risks and identity challenges and approaches with session initiation protocol (SIP), a signaling method for Internet protocol (IP)-based networks. VON, which focuses on the IP communications industry, will be at the Miami Beach Convention Center in South Beach, Fla. from September 21-23.

Jiri Kuthan, assistant vice president of engineering at Tekelec and co-founder of iptel.org, will participate in "Unified Security: New Approaches to Security in the UC [Unified Communications] World" panel. The panel will be moderated by Richard Stiennon, founder of independent research firm IT-Harvest. Kuthan will address new security threats that develop because of new services, service models and vulnerabilities in new applications. He will show how auditing, monitoring, and automated analysis are prerequisites for network security. The panel is scheduled for September 21 from 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. in Room A111.

Immediately following, he will join "The Danger Zone: Dealing with the Top IP Network Security Threats" panel also moderated by Stiennon. Kuthan will address how the open nature of SIP makes it ideal for various multimedia communication applications but also vulnerable to several identity-related security threats. Kuthan will propose near- and long-term strategies to improve SIP security as service providers rely more on IP networks. The panel is scheduled from 12:30 - 1:20 p.m. in Room A101.

Kuthan co-authored the newly released "[ SIP Security ]" book surveying the most important security aspects of SIP-based services. He is also a contributor to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the organization that records protocol standards, best practices, and technical and engineering documents to improve the Internet, and to Tekelec's [ SIP Sessions blog ].

Tekelec has placed online a free "[ SIP Reference Guide ]," an exclusive reference guide for SIP professionals. In addition, the company has a free [ SIP Signaling Router (SSR) Application Handbook ] available for download, as well as an [ SSR multimedia tutorial ] identifying several SIP-based networking challenges.
