Nortel: Nortel Achieves 12000km 40G Milestone on Submarine Cable
MUMBAI, INDIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 1, 2009) - Nortel(1) (OTCBB:NRTLQ) has successfully trialed ground-breaking 40G optical technology across an ultra long distance submarine cable to prove that available bandwidth can be increased by over two times on Reliance Globalcom's Atlantic cable FA1.
The recently completed trial takes the technology into previously uncharted waters. The demanding trial was conducted over a 6000km submarine segment between the United Kingdom and the United States of America. During the trials Nortel equipment was simply added to both ends of the third-party submarine cable, with Nortel able to demonstrate the ability to provide over two times the bandwidth capacity without the need to replace or upgrade the submarine cable or undersea repeaters. In addition, the FA-1 cable was looped back to create a continuous 12000km segment. Nortel demonstrated performance consistent with the ability to deploy significant capacity over the 12000km cable. This result is believed to be the longest 40G result yet achieved.
"Nortel's 40G technology provides the region's major broadband providers like Reliance Globalcom the means to supply their customers with the network scalability they need well into the future," says Hitesh Lokhandwala, managing director, Nortel India. "Put simply, this means a better service for both domestic and commercial users, and it enables the creation of additional revenue streams for providers by fast tracking their ability to sell additional bandwidth. With this milestone, Nortel reinforces its position as a lead contender in the resurgent submarine terminal market."
