SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - January 7, 2009) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: [ RVBD ]), the technology and market leader in WAN optimization, today announced that its customer, [ Canadian Cancer Society ] (Ontario Division), is among the winners of the 2008 InfoWorld 100 awards. The annual awards name 100 companies that have made the best use of technology to enhance their business. The InfoWorld 100 awards celebrate IT projects that use technology in smart, innovative, creative ways to meet business and technical objectives. This is the second consecutive year that Riverbed® customers have been recognized by InfoWorld 100 for success with WAN optimization deployments. Last year's winners included Riverbed customers [ Gensler ] and [ Defense Contract Management Agency ].

Riverbed offers a complete WAN optimization solution that accelerates applications and data for remote offices, data centers, and mobile workers across wide area networks (WANs), accelerating access to applications and data up to 100 times faster. The speed delivered by Riverbed solutions allows organizations to be more nimble, flexible and competitive by enabling IT consolidation without sacrificing user performance, allowing higher productivity for remote offices, eliminating end user frustration caused by slow applications, dramatically shortening backup and replication times, reducing traffic on WANs, and even enabling significant improvements in mobile worker productivity. Over 5,000 customers, over a wide range of markets, have implemented Riverbed WAN optimization solutions across their geographically dispersed organizations.

Canadian Cancer Society Selects Riverbed to Consolidate IT, Speed Data Transfer

Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division, selected and successfully deployed Riverbed Steelhead® appliances to consolidate its IT resources for data protection, while also benefiting from substantial data transfer acceleration. Currently the Society's Ontario division has one provincial office and 36 community offices. More than 65,000 volunteers work with about 470 dedicated staff members across the province.

The search for a solution began when staff at the Society's Ontario division realized they needed to replace some old legacy servers. Gerry Holmes, the division's director of information technology, reviewed several options, including a costly network and server upgrade. After some research, Holmes determined that even with the upgrade option the Society would not receive the same performance increases that a Riverbed implementation would provide. Additionally, if the upgraded network or servers went down, the Society's remote sites could be out of commission for days before replacement equipment could be shipped to the site and a technician could install it.

After a successful pilot program, the Society deployed over 40 Riverbed Steelhead appliances and the Central Management Console to manage all the Steelhead appliances from a central location. This enabled the consolidation of 35 file servers, which reduced the maintenance load for the small IT department and enabled better data protection for its staff. The Steelhead appliances provided the Society's users with LAN-like application performance across the WAN with mission-critical applications including its CRM system, Exchange 2003 and Citrix. The overall process resulted in end user satisfaction and improved collaboration and productivity across all of its locations.

"By implementing Riverbed's solution, we were able to consolidate file servers from our more remote sites, which reduced the maintenance load for our IT department and also enabled us to provide better data protection for our staff," said Holmes. "Riverbed's products also gave our end users LAN-like application performance across the wide area network (WAN), which ensured end user satisfaction and improved collaboration across all of our locations."

The deployment of the Steelhead appliances allowed the organization to avoid the costs of upgrading legacy servers, which ranges from $5,000 - $6,000 each, in addition to avoiding the manpower requirements associated with maintenance, such as nightly back-ups. The ease of deployment and maintenance also allowed the Society in Ontario to avoid hiring new staff members and thus direct more resources to its mission, which is to eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer.
