SAN DIEGO--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--JMAR Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:JMAR), a leading innovator in the development and commercialization of sensing systems for the detection of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) materials, today reported that it has won a 2008 Achievement Award under the U.S. Army's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.
JMAR's Research Division earned the award through its development of a small, lightweight double-pulse laser system that uses laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to detect threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at distances of more than 30 meters. The laser technology for this system has numerous applications for the military and homeland security, as well as the civilian marketplace, where it can be deployed for drug interdiction, environment hazard analysis, materials identification, geology and geochemistry.
In announcing the awards, the Army SBIR program said the winning projects were chosen on four criteria: originality and innovation of research; relevance of the research to the Army mission; immediate commercialization potential of the research, reflecting the primary goal of bringing technology and products to the marketplace; and overall quality performance of the project. There were 755 projects eligible for this year's competition, and 41 were forwarded to the Achievement Awards Selection Committee. The Awards Ceremony will be held at the Pentagon on December 19th.
"This award is further confirmation that JMAR has a winning technology in its portfolio," said JMAR Technologies Chief Executive Officer, C. Neil Beer, Ph.D. "In the military, this laser helps meet the urgent need for a small, rugged multi-pulse laser that can be integrated into man-portable or robotic-deployed sensors for real-time detection of hazardous materials." Dr. Beer added, "It is also noteworthy that the Army judged entries on their commercialization potential. Thus, this award affirms the laser system's fitness for the wide range of non-military markets that we are targeting."
