  • Developing greener alternatives for industrial chemicals that have a smaller impact on the environment isn't always straightforward. In fact, engineering environmentally friendly compounds usually involves tradeoffs: eco-friendly characteristics often come at the expense of other unfavorable properties,

The article from MSN discusses a study published in the journal *Nature Communications* about a technique called cocrystallization, which could help mitigate the environmental impact of chemicals with problematic properties. Cocrystallization involves combining two or more substances to form a new crystalline structure, which can alter the chemical behavior of the components. Researchers found that this method can reduce the volatility, solubility, and reactivity of certain chemicals, making them less harmful to the environment. For instance, by cocrystallizing a highly volatile and toxic compound with a benign substance, the resulting crystal exhibited significantly reduced volatility and toxicity. This approach could potentially be applied to manage pollutants like pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals, offering a new strategy for environmental protection by modifying the inherent properties of these substances without destroying them.
