Santa Ono Charts New Course: From University President to Research Leadership at Hudson Institute

Former University of Michigan (U-M) President Samuel “Santa” Ono is embarking on a new chapter, transitioning from higher education leadership into a prominent research role as the Chief Executive Officer of the Hudson Institute. This move, announced August 18th, marks a significant shift for Ono and signals a potential broadening of his influence in shaping national policy through scientific inquiry.
For nearly three years, Ono led U-M, navigating challenges including pandemic recovery, budget constraints, and ongoing debates surrounding academic freedom and diversity initiatives. His tenure was marked by efforts to enhance student mental health resources, bolster research funding, and foster a more inclusive campus environment. However, it also faced scrutiny regarding administrative spending and the handling of certain personnel matters that ultimately contributed to his departure in January 2024. He served as interim president until Lauriel Harmon assumed the role.
The Hudson Institute, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is an independent research organization focusing on policy issues across a wide spectrum – including economics, defense, foreign affairs, and education. Founded in 1962, it’s known for its conservative-leaning perspectives and influential reports that often inform political debates. Ono's appointment represents a notable departure from the Institute’s traditional leadership profile, as he is widely considered to be more moderate and has previously expressed progressive views on social issues.
This transition raises questions about how Ono’s perspective will shape the Hudson Institute’s research agenda and its engagement with policymakers. While Ono emphasized his commitment to evidence-based policy regardless of political affiliation during a press conference announcing his new role, some observers speculate that his presence could introduce a more nuanced approach to complex issues.
“Santa brings an extraordinary combination of intellectual rigor, leadership experience, and a deep understanding of the challenges facing our nation,” stated Hudson Institute Board Chairman William K. McInerney in a statement released alongside the announcement. “We believe he is uniquely positioned to lead the Hudson Institute as we continue to provide policymakers with data-driven insights and innovative solutions.”
Ono’s background provides a unique foundation for this new role. Prior to U-M, he served as president of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he oversaw significant growth in research funding and international partnerships. He also held leadership positions at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada, demonstrating a consistent track record of championing academic excellence and innovation. His expertise lies particularly in neuroscience, having conducted extensive research on brain function and development throughout his career. This scientific background is expected to be valuable as he guides the Hudson Institute’s research efforts.
The move also comes at a time when research institutions are increasingly facing pressure to demonstrate their societal impact. Ono's experience navigating the complexities of higher education administration, coupled with his scientific expertise, positions him well to lead the Hudson Institute in addressing these challenges and ensuring its continued relevance in shaping public policy. He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to leverage the Institute’s resources to tackle pressing national issues, emphasizing a commitment to rigorous research and open dialogue.
“I am incredibly excited to join the Hudson Institute,” Ono stated. “The opportunity to contribute to evidence-based policymaking and engage with leaders across various sectors is truly inspiring. I believe that through collaborative research and thoughtful analysis, we can make a meaningful difference in addressing the challenges facing our nation.”
While his departure from U-M was somewhat abrupt, Ono’s transition to the Hudson Institute suggests a continued commitment to intellectual pursuits and public service. His leadership at the Institute promises to be a fascinating development, potentially reshaping its research focus and influence on national policy while simultaneously offering him a new platform to advocate for evidence-based solutions to complex problems. The coming years will reveal how Ono’s unique background and perspective will shape the Hudson Institute's direction and impact on the broader American landscape. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2025/08/18/former-um-university-michigan-president-santa-ono-takes-new-research-leadership-job/85706811007/
