Strait Gold Corporation: Strait Gold Appoints Senior Geologist for Exploration in Peru
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 13, 2009) - Strait Gold Corporation (TSX VENTURE:SRD) is pleased to announce that it has retained Cesar Augusto Riofrio as Senior Geologist, based in Lima, Peru, to be responsible for all of the Company's exploration activity in Peru.
"I am pleased that Mr. Riofrio has joined our team and will lead our exploration efforts in Peru, including work at our recently acquired Alicia copper-gold project," said Strait Gold President Jim Borland. "Mr. Riofrio's experience in all aspects of mineral exploration throughout Peru will be a great asset as we continue to build a leading mineral exploration company devoted exclusively in Peru."
Mr. Riofrio, age 44, is an exploration geologist with 17 years experience. He is a graduate of the University of Mayor De San Marcos in Lima and has worked as both a mine geologist in underground and large, open-pit operations and as an exploration geologist in Peru, Brazil, Bolivia and the U.S. He was most recently Senior Geologist with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. in Arizona and with that company's subsidiary in Peru. Prior to his position with Freeport he was a Senior Geologist for Freeport's predecessor companies, Phelps Dodge and Cyprus Amax, since 1995.
Mr. Riofrio's extensive experience in Peru includes leading the team that discovered and defined a preliminary mineral resource at the Haquira Project, currently under option to Antares Minerals Corp. Haquira and Strait Gold's newly acquired Alicia Project both lie within the prolific Andahuaylas-Yauri copper-gold porphyry-skarn belt. This belt also hosts the Tintaya copper-gold skarn mine (Xstrata Copper), Las Chancas copper-gold porphyry deposit (Southern Peru Copper Corp.), Las Bambas copper-gold skarn deposits (Xstrata Copper), as well as numerous other copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry and skarn occurrences.
Mr. Riofrio, will devote his immediate efforts to advancing the Company's Alicia Project in Cusco Department, approximately 500 km southeast of Lima. Past exploration at Alicia by Minera Anaconda Peru S.A. in 2000 defined nine surface skarn zones with high-grade copper and significant gold-silver-molybdenum values over substantial widths. Highlights of this sampling returned up to 56 metres at 1.9% copper, 0.18 grams per tonne (g/t) gold and 12.7 g/t silver from trench Iris 5, and 32 metres at 2.8% copper, 0.32 g/t gold and 14.7 g/t silver from trench Iris 7. These samples are historic in nature and as such should not be relied upon.
