HOUSTON--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--BMC Software (NYSE:BMC) today announced the availability of a customer case study detailing successful implementation by the European Patent Office (EPO) of a comprehensive BMC DB2® database management solution that helped cut the backup time from four hours to 20 minutes, while simultaneously enabling the EPO to more effectively support its patent customers and the management of its patent applications.
The European Patent Office is charged with evaluating and granting European patents. The EPO carries out searches and substantive examinations on a steadily rising number of European patent applications and international applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty. The Office is also responsible for examining oppositions filed against granted European patents. Its boards of appeal are responsible for deciding on appeals filed against decisions of the receiving, examining and opposition divisions of the EPO.

"Approximately 195,000 patent applications are received per year by the EPO, of which 76,000 are granted.
