LGS Supports JFCOM in International Military Exercise Focusing on Ensuring the Defense of the Panama Canal
VIENNA, Va.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--LGS, a subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) dedicated to serving the U.S. government community announced today that it was a part of the Fuerzas Aliadas (FA) PANAMAX 2008 multinational training exercise that involved more than 20 nations.
The purpose of the exercise, which took place in August, is to help ensure the security of the Panama Canal. It was cosponsored by the U.S. Southern Command and the government of Panama and included more than 30 vessels, a dozen aircraft and 7,000 personnel.
The LGS Tactical Base Station Router (TacBSRTM) was utilized during the exercise in support of the U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM), one of the Department of Defense's (DoD) tencombatant command forces overseeing more than 1.16 million dedicated men and women. The command includes active and reserve personnel from each branch of the armed forces, civil servants and contract employees.
The lightweight LGS TacBSR was used to extend secure and non-secure voice communications wirelessly making it easy to extend command and control communications deep into the field.
"We were pleased that the TacBSR was used by JFCOM who was responsible for providing secure voice communications for this exercise," said Ron Iverson, CEO, LGS. "Our single-box cellular solution added a new capability that made it possible for the men and women involved to have access to voice services over U.S. government data devices and standard mobile handsets throughout the duration of the training event."
The TacBSR, the result of six years of development in Bell Labs, provides a single box GSM cellular solution – encapsulating all cellular network functions in exceptionally small, lightweight – the smallest weighed about five pounds. It includes Voice-over-IP backhaul capabilities that enable multiple TacBSRs to be networked in a simple, easy to deploy and manage, flat architecture employing commodity IP networks to inter-connect – providing "Cellular-over-IP" functionality. The TacBSR has received interoperability certification from the DoD's Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) for interconnection to DoD networks, when deployed with other JITC-approved solutions.
